Habib Koité & Bassekou Kouyaté
March 9 @ 8:00 pm
The two greatest figures in Malian string music come together for this collaboration.
ABOUT HABIB KOITÉ
“The biggest pop star of the West African nation of Mali” (Rolling Stone), guitarist and singer Koité has headlined festivals around the world with his infectious blend of rock-influenced Afropop, releasing eight chart-topping albums and working with artists ranging from African vocal superstar Oumou Sangaré to Eric Bibb, Bonnie Raitt, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. A pioneering instrumentalist, Koité has adapted the tuning and playing style of the Malian lute to the Western acoustic guitar, expanding its possibilities.
ABOUT BASSEKOU KOUYATÉ
Virtuoso of the Malian ngoni, Kouyate has created a hybrid approach to the marriage of traditional music and pop sounds, “ancient and utterly contemporary… like some African answer to Hendrix” (The Guardian). He leads the ever-evolving Malian string band Ngoni Ba and has collaborated with artists across the musical spectrum including Youssou N’Dour, Toumani Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, Carlos Santana and U2. Kouate’s newest album Ba Power is his most audacious, with a guest appearance by trumpeter Jon Hassell. Together, Koité and Kouyate take the mix of ancient and modern to a new plateau.
